Matamata, it’s a magical place to call home.
Matamata, once a key stop for travellers including flax traders and explorers, has evolved since its original roots in 1885 from a small railway settlement into a vibrant rural town.
Known for its farming heritage, thoroughbred industry, and of course, Hobbiton, Matamata has developed its own distinctive character over the years. Today, it serves as a junction for commercial, medical, educational, and recreational needs of both town and countryside.
Learn more about us and how Matamata Country Club became part of this thriving local community.
The region surrounding Matamata is picturesque, characterised by rolling green hills, lush farmland, and scenic countryside. It offers a peaceful and idyllic setting for visitors and residents alike.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, golf, cycling on the Hauraki Trail, and bushwalking in nearby Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park. Nearby geothermal attractions, including hot springs provide relaxation and unique geological experiences.
Blending its “Lord of the Rings” fame with natural beauty and a tranquil lifestyle, Matamata is a great destination for tourists and a desirable place to live for locals.
Matamata boasts an excellent medical centre with a range of GP’s and pharmacies, right next to Pohlen Private Hospital. It’s also comforting to know the Waikato Hospital, just under 50 minutes away, is host to a range of specialist medical services and healthcare providers.
On-site at Matamata Country Club, a new hospital and aged-care facility is planned to offer luxurious accommodations and personalised care plans. Until then, residents can access a state-of-the-art aged-care facility at our almost complete sister village, Tamahere Country Club.
Seven generations of the Stanley family have woken to see the sun rise over the Kaimai Ranges on the land that’s now home to the Matamata Country Club.
Fortunately, the Stanley’s strong ties with the property remain intact. Lesley Stanley has lived on the farm for the past 62 years with her late husband, Bruce, and will be one of the first new residents to move into Matamata Country Club.
Many of the site’s magnificent mature trees were planted by Bruce and Lesley after they built their homestead in 1962. It was one of many homes to grace the land over the past century, after Bruce’s great grandparents, William and Mary Stanley, applied for a farm in the 1904 Matamata Settlement ballot.
